The observatories are situated at the best spots for panoramic views of each wetland and at the same time best chances to observe the bird species found in the area. There is no birdwatching equipment available in the observatories and one should bring along their own.
Messa wetland – "Psarodamo" site
This is a renovated building that was being used by the local fishermen. It looks over the mouth of the Messa lagoon and allows a great view of the sea area of the north-east coast of the Gulf. Also a great spot for a small break or picnic. There is enough parking space for 2-3 cars. Best time to visit: November to April
Kalloni Salt Pans - "Tholonia" site
Wooden observatory by the NE corner of the Kalloni Pans. It can be accessed by the main Kalloni-Mitilini road and there is limited parking space by the dust road leading to it (5 cars). Best time to visit: the year-round (morning hours).
NOTE: the first steps to the hide are broken and extra care should be taken to climb it
Kalloni Salt Pans- "Kampos" site
Wooden observatory by the NW corner of the Kalloni Pans. There is unlimited parking space by the sides of the road leading to the saltworks. Best time to visit: the year-round (afternoon hours)
Kalloni Salt Pans- "Lotzaria" site
Wooden observatory by the SW corner of the Kalloni Pans. Enables views of the southern parts of the pans and the adjacent canal. There is unlimited parking space by the sides of the road leading to the saltworks. Best time to visit: the year-round.
NOTE: It is not accessible currently as repair works are due shortly (after the staircase completely detached by this winter's winds).
Tsiknias River mouth site (west)
Wooden resting shelter ideal to observe the birds at the mouth and riverbed of the Tsiknias River. There is limited parking space by the shelter or the dust road to Skala Kallonis. Best time to visit: the year-round (avoid the midday hours).
Wooden resting shelter overlooking the Ennia Kamares lagoon from one side and the upper stream area of the river. There is unlimited parking space by the sides of the secondary road leading to Skala Kallonis. Best months: the year-round. NOTE: The shelter is in bad condition and will soon be repaired.
