Celebrating the World Shorebirds Day 2021

Events
birdwatching

September 6 is celebrated as World Shorebirds Day and for this year, during the week of Sept 1-7 the Global Shorebirds Count is also being organized in sites all over the world.

Shorebirds (waders) are a large group of birds with long legs, most usually occupying wetlands while several of them can be found in steppes and other inland habitats. Several families are included most common of which are Plovers, Lapwings, Stints, Sandpipers, etc. On the island of Lesvos over 40 different species of shorebirds have been recorded, out of the 243 worldwide.

Shorebirds are champions of migration (The Bar-tailed Godwit holds the record being able to keep migrating for 4 days and nights in a row as it moves from Alska to Oceania) and among the most threatened groups of birds nowadays, while there has been decline in the populations for 50% of their species!

The Natural History Museum of the Lesvos Petrified Forest and the Kalloni EIC invite you to take part in two birdwatching event on the afternoons of Saturday and Sunday (4 & 5/09) 17:00-19:00, at the hide of the NE corner of the Kalloni Salt Pans.

The last days the following species have been recorded at the spot: Pied Avocets, Black-winged Stilts, Grey, Kentish and Little Ringed Plovers, Greenshanks, Redshanks, Marsh Sandpipers etc (also Broad-billed Sandpiper, let's keep our hopes up!).

The event is free of admission and is suitable for all age groups. In compliance with the Greek government’s COVID 19 health and safety protocols, we have implemented extra safety measures for the health and safety of our participants and employees.
