The most numerous bird species was - once again!- the Greater Flamingo (Phoenicopterus roseus) with 1600 individuals (1400 of which in the Kalloni Salt Pans alone), the Great Crested Grebe with 1300, the Great Cormorant with 800 and the Yelkouan Shearwater with 300. Other species with large populations were ducks: the Teal (Anas crecca) 290, the Ruddy Shelduck (Tadorna ferruginea) 250, the Wigeon (Mareca penelope) 138 etc. The low numbers of ducks (also Common Shelduck and Mallard) are due to our mild winter.

Some highlights were 3 Red-throated Divers (Gavia arctica), that breed in northern Europe and Asia and 4 Dalmatian Pelicans (Pelecanus crispus)  that have spent all winter here in the Kalloni Gulf - in past years, the very last pelicans were observed until November).

Most of the above species will leave our area for their breeding grounds from mid-February and on.
